Mojito Cocktail Recipe

🌿 Mojito Cocktail Recipe

The Mojito is a refreshing, crisp cocktail that brings together zesty lime, fragrant mint, and the mellow sweetness of sugar with a splash of rum. Originating from Cuba, this drink is a go-to for hot summer days, backyard BBQs, and relaxed get-togethers. Its vibrant flavour and bubbly texture make it one of the most beloved classic cocktails around the world.

History / Origin

The origins of the Mojito trace back to 16th-century Cuba, where a similar concoction was believed to have medicinal properties. It evolved into a rum-based drink during the 19th century and gained international fame in the 20th century. Ernest Hemingway, who lived in Havana for a time, famously adored the Mojito, which helped boost its popularity. Today, it remains a symbol of Cuban cocktail culture — light, lively, and full of character.

Ingredients

To make a traditional Mojito, you will need:

  • 50ml White Rum
  • 1 Lime (cut into wedges)
  • 8–10 Fresh Mint Leaves
  • 2 tsp Caster Sugar or 15ml Sugar Syrup
  • Soda Water (to top)
  • Ice (crushed or cubes)
  • Extra mint sprig and lime wedge (for garnish)

Method

  1. Muddle the Lime and Mint
In a sturdy glass, add the lime wedges, mint leaves, and sugar. Gently muddle with a muddler or spoon to release the lime juice and mint oils — don’t overdo it, or the mint will become bitter.
  2. Add Rum and Ice
Pour in the white rum and fill the glass with crushed ice.
  3. Mix and Top
Stir to combine, then top up with soda water.
  4. Garnish and Serve
Add a sprig of mint and a lime wedge for garnish. Serve with a straw and enjoy.
